Passivhaus and Overheating
The reality of UK houses and flats overheating in current summer weather is now emerging. The experienced weather is already at the +2oC climate level on the weather data files.
What to do? If you assess the overheating risk using Passivhaus PHPP software then it is possible to include some of the design features before you build the house. You then have more choices. Some of features you will need like external shading will impact the look but this will become normal, like PV panels are now typical.
Building Regulations Part O now needs an Overheating assessment but you can also apply this approach to retrofits.
Typically design assessment occurs after planning when the window sizes have all be set – the earlier you do the energy and overheating assessment, ideally at concept stage, then the better the outcome.
Our advice is to start an early PHPP alongside your SAP/HEM Future Homes energy model.

The benefits result in a well made airtight house, with no cold spots, eliminating moisture risk, balanced ventilation for constant regulated fresh air and consideration given to shading requirements to manage overheating.
